本研究は、19世紀半ばから世紀末に一連の交流があった英米の文化人達、特に大西洋の両岸で活躍した人物達が構築していた「アメリカ文化圏」の内実を明らかにすることを目的とする。グローバル時代の先駆けともいえる「国際的」な作家・芸術家に焦点をあて、同時代に実人生での相互交流から、どのような「文化」が醸成されたかを探りたい。具体的にはHenry James, F. Marion Crawford, Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, Julia Ward Howe, Maud Howe Elliottなどが残した文化的・文学的仕事に注目する。一見、ばらばらに存在する上記の作家達を結びつける鍵概念として「ロマンス」が指摘できよう。「ロマンス」について見直すことが、これらの創作家や文化人、そして19世紀末に文学分野でも豊かさを増すアメリカ文化圏を理解するにあたって一つの有効な手がかりとなると思われる。今年度は、研究の中心となるCrawfordに関する先行研究を再検証した。Crawfordの創作理論における「小説は娯楽である」という主張が誇張されて捉えられ、作家の真意が伝わらずに議論が進んでいる様子が分かった。またCrawford関連の資料が新たにイタリアで見つかったので現地に赴き内容を確認した。伝記関連資料および一次資料であり、今後、精査が必要である。Crawford研究の動向については、アップデートして論文にまとめ、著作の一章として発表する予定である。一方、以前に行ったCrawfordの姉にあたる駐日英国公使夫人、Mary Crawford Fraserの日本を舞台とするジャポニズム小説について、論考をまとめた。著者の批評と創作の融合であり極東版の「ロマンス」として理解できると結論した。
