研究対象として設定した時代におけるチャリティ実践の現状を知るため、歴史的事実について書かれた研究書を中心に読解した。また、近年文学研究の場においても大きな注目を集める「ケアの倫理」と本研究には関連があると思われるため、その方面の文献読解も行った。これと並行して、申請者がこれまで研究の中心に据えてきたフォースターの各作品において、チャリティへの言及がどのようになされてきたかを確認した。大叔母の伝記Marianne Thornton (1956)を取り上げ、クラパム派の一員として大きな社会的影響力を持ったソーントン家についての記述から、19世紀的な博愛主義の思想が、20世紀初頭の観点からどのように描き出されているかを考察した。また、チャリティへの言及があるHowards End（1910）については、研究者としての視点からだけでなく、新たに一般読者を獲得すべく翻訳作業を進めている。
