Global Literature from German Artist Residencies Abroad

The research project “Global Literature from German Artist Residencies Abroad” started in 2022 with a 2-day conference held at Freie Universitaet Berlin and Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. Its title was “Writing in Residence: Globale Literaturproduktion in deutschen Residenzprogrammen.” Ten researchers from the fields of literary studies and cultural politics presented papers on the political mission of artist residencies, on the relation between foreign policy and the funding of individual artists as well as on several residency programs such as Villa Massimo, Villa Aurora, and Villa Kamogawa. In addition, four literary writers, one critic and one cultural manager shared their residency experiences at round tables. Very productive debates from that conference were continued in the process of preparing a major publication on the topic. This publication is scheduled for the book series “Word Literatures” with De Gruyter Publishing and covers additional topics such as the German residency programs in Bangalore and Istanbul. Also, the PI published a full lengths article on the kind of literature that emerged from the residency program in Los Angeles, Villa Aurora. This article tells the literary history of Villa Aurora and identifies main subjects and topoi of a large body of texts related to stays at that residence.
