2022年度は、本研究の中心的な研究対象であるEdna Lewisが執筆したエッセイ”What is Southern?”と、その中で言及されている文学作品の考察し、その考察結果の公表に従事した。その成果は、「『食』から読み直すアメリカ南部文学：エドナ・ルイスの『南部的とは何か？』とライト，マッカラーズ，フォークナーの食表象」という論文として、『日本女子大学大学院人間社会研究科紀要　第29号』（2023年3月発行、15~28頁、査読あり）として発表した。ルイスのエッセイで「南部的な」文学作品として具体的に言及されているものの中から、Richard Wrightの短編"Bright and Morning Star" (1938) 、 Carson McCullersのThe Member of the Wedding (1946)、William FaulknerのIntruder in the Dust (1948)に注目した。この三作品が執筆された1930、40 年代は，連邦作家プロジェクトのひとつで、未完に終わったAmerica Eatsプロジェクトが進行していた。それは、作家たちがアメリカの各地域に根ざす食文化についての記事を蓄積したものであったが、そこでは、食文化の人種横断的な側面には触れず，あくまでも「地域」という枠組を強調した食の記述スタイルが構築されつつあった。それとは対照的に、Lewisが「南部的」と呼んだ上記3作品には、黒人女性がつくった料理が肌の色の違いを越えて共有される場面を含んでいるという共通点があることを示しつつ、Lewisが「南部的」と呼んだのは、人種の違いを越えて共有される食のあり方であった可能性を指摘した。
