本研究は３ステージで展開する。まず、①新L2 WTCモデル構築と児童の発達段階を踏まえた英語運用能力尺度開発、②高学年に特化したL2 WTCおよび英語運用能力向上のための英語教育プログラム開発と実践および分析、③中学年に特化したL2 WTCおよび英語運用能力向上のための英語教育プログラム開発と実践および分析である。2022～2023年度の2年間で、新L2 WTCモデル構築と評価尺度開発を行う。初年度である2022年は、日本人児童の聞く・話す能力、英語リタラシー能力の発達段階を踏まえた英語運用能力測定尺度を開発するため、就学前児童（年長児（5～6歳児））の言語運用能力の測定を試みた。具体的には、①文字認識テスト（アルファベットの大文字から小学１年生が誤りやすい12文字を選択し、それぞれに錯乱詞を加えた３択から正しいものを選ぶテスト）、②PVT-R絵画語彙発達検査（3～12歳の基本的な日本語語彙の理解力の発達度を短時間で測定する検査）、③日本語構音検査（日本語で使用される50音を網羅した単語を発音することで対象者の構音力を測定する検査）、④外来語検査（幼児の日常で使用する「スパゲッティ」等のカタカタ語10語を発音させる検査）、⑤英語発音検査（④で使用した10語を英語母語話者の後について発音させる検査）を使用し、年長児の言語運用能力を測定した（①④⑤は独自に開発、②③はそれぞれ上野・名越・小貫(2008)、今井・加藤・竹下・船山・山下 (2010)を使用した）。調査は、2023年1～2月に行われ、A幼稚園の年長児53名を対象とした。調査の結果、平均7歳程度の発達語彙を持つ幼児の日本語・英語発音を確認し①発達段階の影響で発音が難しい音素があること、②母音発音、プロソディの難しさが顕著であること、③外来語の発音が英語に影響していることを確認した。
