外国人日本語学習者の第二言語(L2)としての読解力と言語適性の関係を探るための調査の準備を進めた。本研究では、アイトラッカーによる視線計測を行う予定であるため、予算と照らして導入する機器を検討した。また、L2読解や、読解力に関連する言語適性について、最新の論文も含め、先行研究の文献調査を行った。そして、調査で使用する素材の選定にあたった。調査素材については、まず、学習者の読解力を測定する方法を検討した。大規模試験でしばしば使用される多肢選択問題の学習者の反応は、必ずしも学習者の本当の読解力を反映していない可能性がある。それで、学習者の理解をより反映していると考えられる、テキストを再生する課題を採用し、多肢選択問題で測った能力と比較することにした。そのために、市販の問題集や教材から調査に使用する素材を選定した。さらに、L2読解を支える言語適性が何かを調べるため、言語適性である基本的認知能力を測るテストを検討し、測定する言語適性の構成要素を決定した。L2読解のみならずL2の4技能に影響を及ぼし続けるとされる音韻処理能力や作動記憶の機能（容量、注意制御、処理速度など）を測るテストを、既存のテストで入手可能なものから選択した。さらに、L2の良い読み手は効率よく視線を動かしていると考えられるため、読解における視線計測を行うことも研究目的の一つとしていた。よって、実験装置を研究室に導入して動作確認や操作の練習を行うなどして、調査に備えている。
