本研究の目的は，小学校での英語教育を担当している学級担任に注目し，彼らが2020年度から本格実施となった正式な教科としての「外国語（英語）」の指導経験に伴って，その認知面や情意面をどのように変容させているのかを明らかにすることである。本研究で明らかにする課題は以下である。研究課題１．「小学校英語教育の教科化によって教師の情意面（外国語学習動機・国際的志向性）にはどのような変化が見られるのか。研究課題２．「小学校英語教育の教科化によって教師の認知面（指導観）にはどのような変化が見られるのか。」研究課題３. 「教師の英語指導に対する意欲を高める要因は何か」教科化にあたっては，人的・経済的理由から担任が主体となる授業が引き続き主流となる可能性が高い。教師を支援するためには，個々の教師たちのもつ教育経験や教育理念に即した柔軟で適切なサポートが必要であり，そのためには教師を内面から理解することが求められる。さらに，英語指導を担当する小学校教師は，成長しつつある言語学習者のひとりであり，彼らが言語教師としてだけでなく言語学習者としても，何によってどのように変化しているのかを知ることは，教師教育や小学校英語教育の改善のためだけでなく，教師認知研究とSLA研究の両者に有用な知見をもたらす可能性があると考える。本研究は，研究代表者らがこれまで行ってきた研究がその土台となっている。研究代表者は授業観察とインタビューにより教師の内面を調べる研究を2006年度よりスタートした。その後、４年おきに同じ質問項目による調査を積み上げ、2010年度からは，毎年にわたって地域・学校環境，年齢，立場，経験の違いを考慮して選定した教師たちの協力を得てインタビューや集団討議を繰り返してきた。分析にあたっては、これらのデータが比較対象として用いられる。
