项目摘要

本研究課題は、平成30年度から助成を受けた基盤研究(C)「日本古代の畿内・近国における牧の総合的研究」において明らかにした「生産牧」「備蓄牧」に「中継牧」「名目牧」と類別する牧を加え、古代の牧の実態および存在意義についてより複合的に解明せんとするものである。その１年目にあたる令和4年度は「中継牧」に重点を置き、古代官道と馬の利用についての知見を得ることから研究に着手した。研究会において、研究協力者の山中章氏より、発掘調査などによる考古学分野からの鈴鹿関・不破関の復元的研究についての発表をして頂き、軍事施設である関に伴う馬の飼育空間について意見交換し、成果をメンバーで共有した。その情報共有を踏まえて、古代山陽道の駅家である草上駅・邑智駅(兵庫県姫路市)、布勢駅(たつの市)、高田駅(上郡町)、安芸駅(広島県府中町)の各推定地を巡見し、鈴鹿関・不破関の復元案と、各駅家との立地・地形を比較検討した。併せて、天皇の御馬を放牧したことが文献から知られる播磨国家島牧(兵庫県姫路市家島)も巡見した。既に知られるように、家島には古墳や製塩遺跡、延喜式内社があり、歴史的にも重要な意味を持つことが推量される。60疋の御馬を平安京から山陽道を通って家島へと歩かせる行列を道中で見せ、京へ向かう海上通行者に対して畿内へ入る手前で天皇の御牧を見せつけることは、天皇による示威行為に他ならない。家島は備蓄牧に類別できるが、牧には示威という機能も加味して考えることが重要との認識を得た。
