20世紀中葉のマレー語定期刊行物の分析を通じて、集団間や媒体間の相互作用性に着目しつつ、マレー民族の形成過程の動態を明らかにすることを目指した。研究成果として、2023年1月の日本マレーシア学会の研究大会において発表を行った。そこでは、1930年代に発行されたマレー語新聞『マジュリスMajlis』を用いて、マレー・ナショナリズムの言説における王権の位置づけを再検討した。スランゴル州の王位継承にイギリス植民地政府が干渉した問題をめぐり、同紙は英語紙を頻繁に引用しながら王権を擁護していた。ここから、民族主義者はイギリスや華人など非ムスリムとの関係構築の窓口として王権を重視していたと論じた。言語や民族をまたいだ論争を通じてマレー民族という枠組みが構想される過程の一端を示すことができた。また、マレー民族内の民族主義とイスラム主義をめぐる相互作用に関して、1950、60年代に発行されたジャウィ月刊誌『カラムQalam』のデータベースを用いた分析を行っている。これについては、2022年度は成果として発表できなかったものの、次年度に発表を予定している。くわえて、一般向けの図書『東南アジアのイスラームを知るための64章』（明石書店）に1章を寄稿し、マレーシア地域（マレー半島、ボルネオ）のイギリス植民地期および日本軍政期におけるイスラムの展開を描いた。植民地統治下であっても、王権や行政機構のなかでイスラムの制度化が進む一方、中東の改革思想の影響を受けて近代主義とりこみながら基盤を強めていったことを論じた。
