令和４年度は、本格的な実験・検討の実施に先立つ現地調査（既存データの収集と現地踏査）期間として研究を進めた。また、今後の研究に必要な備品の購入も併せて行った。第１回目の現地調査は、６月２４日から翌２５日までの２日間にわたり、研究代表者と研究協力者３名の計４名で、大阪府と岡山県へ赴いた。初日は、研究協力者３名とともに、古代土木技術に関する研究・展示を行っている大阪府立狭山池博物館を訪問し、古代に築造されたため池堤防に係る築造技術を視察した。また、版築技法のルーツとなる古代東アジアの土木技術に関する研究成果についてご教示いただき、論文等資料を受領した。２日目は、岡山県総社市の史跡鬼ノ城跡を訪問し、史跡整備事業として版築土塁の復元あるいは修理を行った際の設計上の考えや工事における工夫、施工後の維持管理方法などについて聴取を行った。第２回目の現地調査は、１０月７日の１日間、研究代表者と研究協力者２名の計３名で、福岡県内の２つの古代山城（史跡御所ヶ谷神籠石（行橋市），史跡鹿毛馬神籠石（飯塚市））を対象とした。史跡御所ヶ谷神籠石では、内托式土塁と地山との接合部分の処理や版築土塁の特徴などについて、調査担当者から直接聴取するとともに現地を視察した。史跡鹿毛馬神籠石では、特に傾斜版築の特徴について重点的に聴取し、現地も視察した。第３回目の現地調査は、令和５年１月１８日から２０日の３日間、研究代表者１名で、瀬戸内海沿いの４つの古代山城（史跡石城山神籠石（山口県光市），史跡永納山城跡（愛媛県西条市），史跡屋嶋城跡（香川県高松市），史跡城山城跡（香川県坂出市）を訪問した。主に土材の違いに伴う工法変化に着目して踏査・聴取を行ったが、明確な違いを見出すには至らなかった。しかし、永納山城跡にて傾斜版築様の土塁剥取り標本を確認し、共通的な技術である可能性を得ることができたことは大きい。
