本研究の目的は、平成30年の北海道緊急民俗芸能調査で示されている民俗芸能総数260件の約25％にあたる64件が集中している北海道南西部の伝承保存会を対象に、それぞれの伝承過程と活動状況の実態を明らかにすることにある。また、同調査で活動停止状態の伝承保存会13団体の実態把握とそれぞれが保管していると考えられる有形民俗文化財の所在調査を行うものである。さらに、これらの調査で収集した情報を公開することを前提に、デジタルデータとして資料化するものである。調査にあたっては、北海道緊急民俗芸能調査にあげられている17市町を、①上ノ国町・江差町・厚沢部町、②乙部町・せたな町・今金町、③松前町・福島町・知内町、④木古内町・北斗市・七飯町、⑤函館市・鹿部町、⑥森町・八雲町・長万部町の6グループに分け、そのうち2グループごとに祭祀時期前（4月から6月）、祭祀時期（7月から10月）、祭祀時期後（11月から3月）の3期に調査を実施し、3ヵ年で調査を終える計画を立てた。しかしながら、調査初年度にあたる令和4年度は、9月末までコロナ禍の影響で居住地以外への現地調査が難しく、当初に計画していた祭祀時期前と祭祀時期の調査を実施することができなかった。10月以降には現地調査が可能となったことから、祭祀時期後の調査を実施し、あわせて令和2年以降のコロナ禍で活動を停止していた祭礼や民俗芸能の把握と再開に至る状況について、調査対象地にある市町の文化財担当者などへ聞き取りを行った。さらに、活動停止中の伝承保存会を含めて、北海道南西部で伝承されている民俗芸能に関係する有形民俗文化財の所在調査を実施した。また、映像資料を含め調査により収集した情報はデジタルデータ化を進めたほか、データを確実に保管するためのあり方と持続可能な伝承活動に資するための公開システムについて検討した。
