项目摘要

今年度は、バートンの農業主義および土地再分割についての考察をさらに深めるため研究報告を行った。同時にバートンの政策提言の背後にある思想的立場を明確にすべく研究報告および論文作成を進めた。またエディンバラ大学およびセント・アンドリュース大学にてバートンに関する資料調査を行った。各詳細については、以下説明を行う。まずバートンの農業主義および土地再分割論に関する考察は、これまで研究を進めてきたものだが、論文化に向けてさらに研究を深めるべく、ヨーロッパ経済学史学会の年次大会（2022年6月11日 Zoom参加）にて報告を行った。本報告では、穀物価格と死亡率との関連など、これまであまり取り上げられることのなかったバートンの考察を示すことができた反面、その思想的基礎を明確にするにはまだ課題があることも明らかになった。そこでバートンの古典派経済学批判を通じて、その思想的立場に接近しようと、マルサス学会第31回大会（2022年7月3日山形大学）にて報告を実施した。同時代の経済学者であるマルサス、シスモンディとの相違を通じて、バートンの立場を明確にしようとするもので、質疑応答のなかから、バートンの立場は近代ヨーロッパにおける共和主義思想に共通するものがあるとの指摘を得た。ここからホント、イグナティエフ、ポーコックなどのシヴィック・ヒューマニズムの研究をふまえ、バートンの思想的立場について考察した。その成果は『マルサス学会年報』第32号において公開される。資料調査については、2022年9月にエディンバラ大学およびセント・アンドリュース大学の資料室に出張し、バートンとチャーマズとの書簡をはじめ、関連資料を閲覧するとともに、写真撮影を行った。
