本研究の目的は、幕末期から太平洋戦争終結まで、一世紀におよぶわが国の外国為替政策を包括的に分析することである。経済史とマクロ経済学を融合、統合する研究を目指している。３年計画の最初の年は、研究の対象期間を幕末期、明治期、戦間期、戦時期におおまかにわけて、文献の集中的な収集と整理をおこなった。収集した文献は約500点（ほぼ３分の１が、電子ジャーナルを含むデジタル資料）にのぼり、これらのうち約290の文献（論文140、著書150）を読み、ノートの形でまとめた。経済史の様々なトピックについては、経済史学者はもちろん、経済学を専攻していない歴史学者によっても膨大な研究がなされていることがわかった。読めば読むほど、さらに読まなければならない文献が現れてくる。さらに文献には矛盾もあり、深く掘り下げて史実を確認する作業も必要である。500ばかりの文献を収集したということは、図書館にて検索した結果ではなく、真剣で時間集約的な研究作業の過程の結果なのである。さらに、これらの文献からおもにマクロデータを拾い、エクセルに入力し、図表を作成することもおこなった。中には、深く埋もれていた戦前の文献から拾ったデータもあり、それを見つけただけでも大きな成果であった。このデータを何とか活用したいと思う。文献に書かれた史実の多くは既存の知識であるが、この過程で、あらたな知見を提供すべく、最低２本の論文を執筆するための具体的なアイデアが固まってきた。
