本年度は主に、①公刊されている留岡幸助の著述・日記の分析（とくに、北海道の空知集治監にて監獄教誨に従事していた頃のものを中心に）、②留岡と同時代に北海道の釧路集治監にキリスト教教誨師として赴任した原胤昭の編集による雑誌『獄事叢書』の分析、③非行・犯罪の予防の思想に関する文献調査を行なった。①の作業をすすめることで、ペスタロッチの思想や事業について留岡が言及している箇所を確認・同定することができた（研究開始時での初年度計画）。②については、空知集治監時代の留岡の考え方や実践を精査するなかで、同時代的な監獄実践とその限界についても調査する必要性があると考えられた。そこで、留岡と同じく北海道で教誨活動に従事しながら監獄改良を志向した原胤昭に着目し、彼が編集して発刊されていた『獄事叢書』の文献調査に着手した。在監者たちの教化・悔悛・啓蒙に用いられていた本の裏表紙に脱獄用のノコギリが隠されていたことを報じる記事や、さらに、北海道開拓のための労働に使役されていた在監者たちの逃亡についての留岡の記述などから、監獄において在監者を統制することの限界という現実が存在していたことが確認できた。①と②をふまえて、③として、19世紀から20世紀にかけての社会防衛や統治に関する言説・実践についての着眼も次年度以降の研究を進展させるために必要であると考え、監獄における在監者への処遇としての統治の技法に関するミシェル・フーコーの著述についての（フーコーの思想に関する先行研究の分析とあわせて）文献調査を行なった。留岡や原とおなじく、20世紀のフランスで監獄改良事業に関わったフーコーやマルク・アンセルによる、監獄における統制を強めるほどに監獄内の逸脱行為を生産してしまうことになる、という着想は興味ぶかく、留岡の思想・実践を読み解くうえで重要な論点を示唆している。
