本年度の研究では、コロナ感染状況が改善しつつあることから、2022年7月―8月にかけて、第一回のサマーヒルスクールの参与観察を試みた。ここでは、サマーヒルの教員、校長（Zoe Readhead）へのインタビューを試みた。インタビューの中では、サマーヒルスクールがかつて政府によって閉校勧告を受けた時の生き残り戦略について、詳細に聞くことができた。これまで、我が国では全く知られていなかったが、当時の学校査察が極めて政治的な意図、すなわち、学校教育の統制を強める政府政策と、自由なカリキュラムを標榜するサマーヒルスクールとが、教育学的にではなく、政治的に対峙していたということである。校長のZoeによれが、父親ニールから引き継いだフリースクール思想を守るため、教育学者、法学者、さらに、地元、Leistonの地方議員が支援に出たという。政府は、世論に押され、最終的には妥協案を、秘密裡にもってきて、それに合意したというのが真相だった。この事実は、今回の調査で初めて明らかになった大きな収穫であった。しかしながら、その後、サマーヒルは、妥協案を受け入れたことで、その自由思想にわずかに変化が起きている。言い換えれば、創始者ニールの思想が、次の世代になって少しずつ変容していっているということである。ある思想が時間や社会状況と共に変化していく過程を分析する意味でも、サマーヒルの実践と創設者の思想の関係を、さらに明らかにしていく必要があると考える。なお、これらの成果は、中間報告として、2023年6月、中部教育学会にて発表の予定である。
