本研究の課題は次の二つである。(1)小説教材に対して客観性のある深い読みを提示する。現在使われている中学・高校全ての国語教科書の小説教材を分析し、その成果をインターネットで公開する。 (2)本研究が使用した知見を国語教師が自分で使用できるよう、西洋修辞学を応用した使いやすい教材分析法を開発する。これについてもインターネットで公開する。第一の課題である教材分析の進捗状況は以下である。現在使用されている中学・高校の全ての国語教科書を入手し分析作業を進めている。分析する教材は40程度であり、作品の分析は半分以上完了している。第二の課題である教材分析法の開発の進捗状況は以下である。二つの分析法の開拓を進めている。１）小説内の情報を手掛かりとして、小説後の展開を予測する。注目するのは、登場人物の心理変化であり、小説内の体験の残した心理的影響を推測し、その後の人生への影響を考える。一般の教師が使用しやすいように、心理的影響は、プラス～マイナスの方向と強さ、さらに影響が及ぶ対象で測り、登場人物の特徴に重ねることで、その後の展開を予想させる。小説後の展開を予想させる研究は珍しくないが、どのような小説にも応用できる形で、この方法を整理した先行研究はない。２）作者（あるいは語り手）が力を入れて語っている場所を見つけ、それを手掛かりに、その意図や狙いを考える。力を入れて語られた箇所は語りの山場であり、山場の場所から、語り手の計算・性格・隠された物語などが浮かび上がってくる。語り手が力を入れた個所は、修辞技法の密度や現在感の高さから客観的に認定できる。現在感は有効性と汎用性の高い優れた概念であるが、西洋修辞学においても認知度は低い。この方法の提案は、現在感という概念の再評価の意味も持つ。
