教養として歴史を個人が知るだけにとどめず、市民が歴史を活用し、他者に伝えるパブリックレベルでの歴史活用実践に近年注目が集まっている。しかしながら、市民の歴史活用実践のなかには社会的な非難や論争を引き起こすものもある。民主主義社会の形成をめざし、歴史活用に主体的にかかわる市民を育成する学校歴史学習はどうあるべきなのか。新しい理論構築をめざすことが本研究の目的である。市民による歴史活用実践を収集・整理し、民主主義社会の形成という観点からその可能性と限界を明らかにすることで、学校歴史の役割を再考したい。具体的には以下の４点を明らかにしたい。 ①市民による歴史活用実践（SNSなどへの投稿や歴史ガイドなど）にはどのようなものがあり、その特質や課題は何か。 ②①を実践とその目的から整理すると、市民による歴史活用実践にはどのようなタイプが見られるのか。 ③②の各タイプを民主主義社会の形成という観点から見たとき、どのような可能性と限界があるのか。 ④③で検討した可能性を拡張し、限界を乗り越えるために、学校歴史は子供たちや市民をどのように支援することができるのか。2022年度はまず①市民による歴史活用実践（SNSなどへの投稿や歴史ガイドなど）を取集するための方針を決めるべく邦文の文献調査を進めた。教育学、歴史学、社会教育などの先行研究を概観し、今後の調査対象の選択方針として、まずは公共的かつ権威的な性格の強い博物館における展示物や無償あるいは有償のガイドの語りなどを優先することとした。
