2022年度は地域事情の理解と課題把握を目的に沖永良部島知名町にて予備調査を実施した．2022年12月23日，24日にかけて知名町役場にて教育委員会，同企画振興課，知名町社会福祉協議会，児童発達支援施設を訪問し，島内の教育のデジタル化や高齢者に対するICT普及支援政策などの現状について聞き取りを行った．また，23日には知名町企画振興課主催の女性のためのプチサロン・セミナーに出席し，現地小学校の保護者らによる学校デジタル化に関する問題意識や要望の聞き取りと，意見交換を行った．この訪問の成果として，知名町役場や子育て支援NPOほか，現地における研究協力体制の基盤となる人的ネットワークが形成された．また，現地におけるデジタル化の課題として子どもや若者だけでなく高齢者のICT利用の支援やデジタル社会における包摂（inclusion）の問題があることがわかった．その後，現地調査の成果を踏まえて現地在住の研究協力者との間で，2023年度の研究計画に関して「デジタル社会参加に対する自覚(awareness)の醸成と意識化(conscientization)に向けた島嶼部在住者と支援者との対話の場づくりのための方法と課題 の解明」に向けた方策を話し合った．その結果として，当面は子どもに対するSTEAM教育の場づくりを行うこと，特に子どもを支える親や教育関係者の交流の場を作ること，具体的な題材としてドローンを使ったコンテンツ作りのワークショップを開催し子どもたちのデジタル技術への親しみの形成がもたらす教育的効果を評価することなどが素案としてまとまった．
