Building self-efficacy for disaster preparedness motivation - An evidence-based approach

(1) In West Bengal, India, a flood-prone village, Gangasagar, has been chosen as the case study area for a field survey. (2) In order to establish relationships with local communities, I have conducted several formal and informal meetings with community leaders, village voluntary organizations, civic organizations, and local government officials. (3) I have acquired the necessary equipment and software for field survey. (4) I reviewed a wide range of literature on flood risk management and disaster risk reduction initiatives in India and South Asia, including journal papers, reports, and newspaper cuttings. (5) I have collected government reports, articles in local newspapers, and student thesis papers to get comprehensive picture of the flood risks in the case study area. (6) I have conducted field surveys in Gangasagar village to collect information on - socio-demographic features, flood frequency, height and duration, property damage and human losses , flood preventive initiatives . (7) I have summarized the findings of the survey, which will be presented at an international conference in September, 2023. According to my in-depth findings, floods are quite common in the village, and property loss is quite high, although no human lives were lost. As a result of livelihood dependency in the area, people are unwilling to leave this area despite high risk perception. An evacuation center and an early warning system are not in place. In the area, flood risk reduction is barely minimal.
