「一酸化窒素(NO)の生物学」国際学術集会は、1989年以来2年毎に開催され、NO研究の専門家集団の情報交換および討論の場として、学術的に極めてレベルの高い集会と位置づけられてきた。今回、第5回を開催するにあたり、NO研究の専門家だけでなく、将来をになう若手研究者に多く参加してもらい、最先端の情報を得ると共に自分達の研究を広く世界に知らせ、国際的な友情を育んでもらうことを目的に、組織委員を中心とした準備委員会を開催し討議を重ねた。その結果、海外の若手研究者が参加しやすいように、優れた発表が期待できる人にはトラベルグラントを提供することにした。また、国内の大学院生に対しては、参加費を減額することにして、少しでも多くの若手研究者に折角の機会を利用してもらえるように配慮した。広報活動としては、1)前年度に引き続き、会告を後援を頂いた国内諸学会の学会誌、国内学術雑誌、医学情報誌などに掲載した。2)各委員の専門分野における国内および国際的な関連学会およびシンポジウムにおいて、アナウンスすると共にポスターの掲示を行った。3)全国の関連諸機関にサ-キュラーを発送し、参加を呼びかけると共に、同時にその内容をインターネット上のホームページに掲載した。以上の活動により、約500題の演題が提出された。そこで、より良い学術プログラムを作成するために、各演題をそれぞれ3名の国際委員に採点を依頼し、その結果を基にMoncada博士を含む世話人らで最終案を作成した。出来るだけ多くの研究者に発表の場を提供する意味でポスター発表を充実させることにした。採択された演題の抄録はJapanese Journal of Pharmacologyのsupplementとして出版すると共に、発表された論文はモノグラフの形で出版することを決定した。また、優れた協同研究などが芽生える機会を提供するために、各セッション後の討論時間を別枠で設定したり、ポスター発表に対する討論が充実するような環境を整えた。さらに、学術集会の前後には、参加される一流のNO研究者を交えた専門別のミニシンポジウムや講演会を日本各地で開催する計画を立て、実施した。
