Todays dynamic demand on machine tools is increasing arithmetically with new highly dynamic and flexible machining tasks. The performance of machine tools is often diminished by vibration phenomena which are caused by adverse dynamic machine behaviour. Currently the reliable determination of the dynamic behaviour of machine tools can only be performed on real prototypes with the help of metrological investigations. Subsequent measures to improve the dynamic behaviour represent a serious time and expense involved in the development of machine tools. For this reason, the determination of the dynamic behaviour of exciting tools with the help of virtual prototypes in recent times is increasingly becoming the focus of manufacturers. By the use of highly developed software solutions and high performance processors the dynamic behaviour of the machine tools structure can be calculated properly. Nevertheless most calculated results are defective. The reason can be find in the fact, that there is no knowledge about the damping behaviour of the machines components and the lack of capable models and parameters. The Research Units target is to analyse the most important machine-components according to their damping behaviour. Based on extensive measurements and suitable models to describe damping in the simulation the project will establish a basis to improve the forecast of the dynamical behaviour of machine tools.
