三葉形平面の部屋は、現存遺構から見る限り、紀元前3世紀のゴルティスの浴場から確認できる。2世紀末までの三葉形平面の部屋は浴場、墓廟、ニュンファエウム、ヴィッラといったさまざまな建物に使用され、特定の建物種類、特定の地域に限定されて用いられていたわけではなかった。しかしながら、これらの平面を見るといずれもやや特異な平面や形態をなしていた。しかし、3世紀後期から4世紀にかけて状況は一変する。まず三葉形平面を持つ建物が急激に増加する。そしてそのほとんどが西地中海都市に建設され、しかも、ヴィッラと浴場建築に集中して用いられるようになった。ヴィッラと浴場建築に見られる三葉形平面は、その使われ方、その出現の背景ともにまったく異なるもので、それらの間の相互の影響は考えられない。ヴイッラ建築においては中庭あるいはペリスティリウムに面して配置され、トリクリニウムあるいはバンケット・ホールとして使われることがほとんどであった。その出現の背景にはよりくつろいだ食事を行うためのstibadiumの導入が大きな契機となっていた。一方浴場建築における三葉形平面では、他の部屋と出入り口で結び付けられ、3つのアプシスに水槽を配置する手法が一般的で、これは明らかにローマのトラヤヌス浴場の熱浴室をモデルとしたものであった。タルクイニアの三葉形平面の部屋は、その配置や規模を他の事例と比較すると、トリクリニウムとして建設された可能性が高く、おそらく4世紀前半に建設されたと推定される。
