The Kenoticism of the Kyoto School: The Cross in the Thought of Nishitani Keiji

In the past year of research, I developed a novel perspective on the historical significance of the encounter between Buddhism and Christianity.I investigated the Kyoto School's interpretation of the Christian concept of "kenosis" (God's "self-emptying" on the cross) through the Mahayana Buddhist concept of "emptiness."I analyzed how the historical perspective of Nishitani Keiji on Christianity allows for understanding their interpretation of "kenosis" as a strategic response to the crisis of modern nihilism.I presented the results of my research orally and handed in several papers for peer-reviewed publication, partially accepted (『人間存在論』) and partially pending review (『求真』/JEAP).I am the organizer of an international workshop dedicated to Nishitani Keiji and his philosophy of religion.
