项目摘要

2022年10月から2023年3月まで、現地での調査を中心に行った。この中では、研究の対象である清掃労働者集落の住民の殆どと、その祖先の移住時期や出身地域を同じくする紅茶農園の労働者集落の観察を行うことができた。またコロナ禍によって実現できなかった主調査地である北西部州K町での参与観察の機会を作ることができた。紅茶農園地域の労働者集落住民の状況で特に注目されたのは、教育や職業の場を含む日常生活の場において、他民族との接点が非常に少ないことである。このことは、そこに住む住民が自他の境界をどのように引くかという問題に大きく関わる。他民族の中で教育を受け働くことが生活の条件となる清掃労働者集落の住民に比べて、紅茶農園集落の住民にとって「タミル」であることは生活の上で周囲との葛藤を生み出す要因にはなりにくいことが推察された。同じ時期に南インドから移住した人々を祖先に持つと言っても、そのアイデンティティのあり方は清掃労働者集落住民と紅茶農園集落住民とでは大きく異なることがより明確になったと考える。また北西部州K町では、住民が帰属する宗教の祭礼や行事（2022年12月には集落住民の約半数が所属するキリスト教教会のクリスマス・コンサート、2023年2月には集落内のヒンドゥー教寺院で行われたマハーシヴァラースリの儀礼）、ゴミ処理場における清掃労働の現場、住民が働く靴や鞄の修理工長屋などでの参与観察を行った。以前の調査に比べて、宗教帰属による集落住民の帰属意識の違いに関して踏み込んだ話を聞くことができた。また修理工長屋での観察では、なじみ客とのやり取りや周囲の店の従業員とのやり取りなどから、そうした生業が、民族帰属だけでなく社会階層においても多様な人々のとの交渉の中で営まれていることが明らかになった。
