项目摘要

本年度は申請時に予定していた課題すべてに取り組むことはできたものの、成果物の公開には至らない部分もあった。まず年度前半には予定通り、社会小説論を執筆したマイヤーと、オーストリアの作家シュティフターの関係性について、マイヤーに関連する同時代人の伝記的背景などを調査した。そしてその成果を7月末の研究会にて発表した。その前段階として、学内の研究発表の場でもマイヤーとシュティフターの関係性を別の観点から論じ、議論の意義を確認することができた。これらを通じて、批評と実作という二つの論点を区別してシュティフターと社会小説の同時代性を論じる必要を確認し、社会小説批評を19世紀全体の文脈を踏まえて論じるべきだと考えた。そのうえでより綿密な議論を形成するため、当該年度の論文執筆は見送ることとなった。年度後半の成果として、シュティフターが生きた時代の文化的、社会的背景を広く踏まえて「社交」概念の意味づけを明らかにするため、『老独身者』に関する論文を執筆し、予定通り学内の研究雑誌に掲載した。これによって、社会小説の歴史的理解に重要な「社会」概念と密接な関係をもつ「社交」概念がシュティフター作品の中でどのような文脈に位置付けられるのかについて一定の判断基準を得ることができた。この成果は研究課題の更なる発展に寄与するものである。同じく年度の後半に行う予定であった小説『電気石』に関する研究は、学内の研究発表の場で公にしたものの、当初予定していた論文の投稿には至らなかった。これは上記の『老独身者』に関する課題が予想以上に難航したためである。文献調査や一次文献の収集は完了しており、翌年度に当初の計画に沿って研究を進めることで以上の進捗の遅れについては修正が十分可能であると判断される。
