本研究は、鎌倉時代彫刻の大成者とされる仏師・運慶（生年未詳-1223）の仏像制作の実態を包括的な観点から解明することにより、運慶作品ひいては運慶という人物自体を客観的に捉え直すことを主眼としている。そのために、本年度は、運慶晩年の作である興福寺北円堂諸像と一具であった可能性が近年指摘されている同寺南円堂伝来四天王立像、および運慶一門ら慶派工房の一画期をなす造像であったと推察される東大寺大仏殿四天王立像（焼失）を研究対象として設定し、両者が共に治承４年（1180）の南都焼討に伴う再興事業であることから、当該期における南都仏教界の思想から両者を捉え直す試みを行った。具体的に述べれば、まず前者に関して、絵画・彫刻として表された日本の四天王作例および四天王の像容に言及する史料・経典を網羅的に収集し、分析を行った。この作業により得られたデータをもとに、興福寺南円堂伝来像を日本彫刻史の流れの中に位置づけた結果、運慶が造像した東大寺大仏殿四天王像との顕著な類似性が明らかとなり、運慶作品とみなす妥当性を高めることができた。また、南都仏教界の思想に着目すれば、本像に特徴的な装飾性の志向が檀像との関わりの中で捉え得る可能性があることを明らかにした。この研究成果を日本宗教文化史学会第26回大会にて発表し（「南円堂伝来四天王立像の装飾性に関する一考察─慶派神将像の意匠形式の変遷から─」2022年６月）、同学会誌に投稿、採録された（「興福寺南円堂伝来四天王立像の装飾性に関する一考察─大仏殿様四天王像との類似性に着目して─」〈『日本宗教文化史研究』26（２）、35-52頁、2022年11月〉査読あり）。これに関連して、東大寺大仏殿四天王像の像容と役割について再興造営を取り巻く思想的背景から解明する研究を進め、第76回美術史学会全国大会での口頭発表の実施が決定している。
