「共和政ローマにおける寡頭政支配体制の実体の究明」と題する本研究においては、前3〜1世紀の「帝国化」時代におけるローマの政治体制、いわゆる「ノビリタス支配」のあり方について、とりわけそのイデオロギー的側面に焦点を当て、分析を試みた。考察の一応の成果の概略を示すと、以下の通りである。ローマの統治者集団は一般にnobilitasと呼ばれ、その意味するところは通常「名門家系(の者)」と解されている。だが、実際フロロジカルな見地よりnobilitasの語を分析すると、「名門」の語義以外にも、virtus(の保持)、またboni,optimates(またその反転像としてのpauri,factio)といった、多様なニュアンスが渾然一体化された形で込められているのが分かる。virtusとは「徳」と訳されるが、ローマ的観念からして、それは、世間的に評価され、その者に声望をもたらすという、外向的性格をもつ。この種の声望は究極的には政務官職へのつながるものであり、またローマにおける家柄の良し悪しとはとりも直さずその家系が帯びた政務官職の格に対応する。このような脈絡において、nobilitasにおける「名門」の要素は、virtusへとつながるものといえる。他方、virtusが評価される要件は、国家(res publica)への貢献であると考えられる。キケロは、res publicaの護持こそが正義であり、そのために働く者はboni,optimatesであると評価する。ここにおいて、nobilitasの含意されるboni,optimatesのニュアンスもまた、元をたどるとvirtusへと行き着くことが分かるのである。結論的に言えば、「ノビリタス支配」の政治イデオロギーの本質は、nobilitas-virtus-res publicaの結節に存するといえる。本研究の成果の一部は、「virtus,fides,nobilitas-共和政ローマの政治イデオロギーに関する-考察-」という論文に、目下まとめつつあるところである。
