本研究の目的は、明治20年代から30年代にわたる日本近代文学の諸相の一端を、下層社会や貧民という観点から解明することである。そのため今年度は、昨年度に引き続いて①下層社会や貧民等のキーワードに基づいて明治中期の新聞雑誌の言説調査を進めるとともに、あらたに②下層社会を扱った小説作品の研究発表を行なった。①前年度に行なった民友社発行の『国民之友』の記事調査の補完に加え、同社に近い青年たちが多く関係した雑誌『青年文学』内の言説も全号分確認した。調査成果は必要に応じて松原岩五郎『最暗黒之東京』の分析に組み込み、次年度に論文としてまとめる予定である。他方、実施計画通り悲惨・深刻小説流行期の文学状況を把握するため、あらたに『文芸倶楽部』の調査を開始し、創刊号から悉皆調査を行なった。こちらは未完了のため、次年度も継続予定である。②作品の具体的な分析については、広津柳浪の「雨」（明治35年）が貧民窟周辺を舞台としていることから、本作の下層社会にまつわる表現を把握する研究発表を行なった。先行する貧民窟探報記との比較によって、現実に根ざした探報記の報告とは大きく異なる貧民像が創出されていることを明らかにした。本発表により、創作と探報記の比較検討が手法として有効であると手応えを得られたので、次年度も他作品をとりあげ、諸文芸ジャンルをまたいで多角的に、貧民に関する表現の分析を進めていきたい。また、当初の計画外の成果としては、森鴎外没後100年に際して新出草稿・資料の解題に携わり、主に雑誌Die Grenzbotenの調査を担当した。

The purpose of this study is to explore the various aspects of modern Japanese literature from the 1920s to the 1930s. This year's report is published in the Journal of the Middle Ages. The results of the investigation are necessary to analyze the "Darkest Tokyo" of Iwagoro Matsuhara, and the next year's paper is scheduled to be published.
