本研究は、自殺で親を失った子ども（自死遺児）に配慮した自殺対策プログラムの開発・提案と、読み聞かせ用の「絵本」の作成およびその効果検証を目的としている。日本では、自殺予防教育が進められてきたが、2022年10月に策定された新しい自殺総合対策大綱の中でも「SOSの出し方に関する教育」について触れられており、「学校において、命や暮らしの危機に直面したとき、誰にどうやって助けを求めればよいかの具体的かつ実践的な方法を学ぶと同時に、辛いときや苦しいときには助けを求めてもよいということを学ぶ教育」が今後も推進されることとなった。「SOSの出し方」も重要であるが、教育を受ける子どもたちの中には、自殺を考える子どもたちや親が自殺している子どもたちも数多くおり、現場の教育者・支援者は、どのように子どもたちに接すれば良いのか悩んでいる。そのため、やはり「自死遺児に配慮した自殺対策プログラム」や「絵本」の作成が重要である。2022年度は、自殺対策プログラムおよび絵本の作成準備のため、研究分担者・研究協力者との研究打ち合わせを複数回実施してきた。そして、自死遺族へのインタビューや調査対象先の選定・交渉を行うとともに、死別・グリーフを扱った書籍に関する文献調査を行った。日本国内では、「死別」を扱った絵本はあるものの、「自殺」について扱った絵本は数少なく、特に「自死遺児」を対象としたものは現時点で見当たらなかった。そのため、海外の絵本にも範囲を広げ調査を行っている。
