本研究では、インターネットの普及で情報収集が容易になったこと、遺伝子の解析や合成の費用が安くなったことなどを背景に市民が日曜大工感覚でバイオテクノロジーの実験を行なう「DIYバイオロジー（DIYバイオ）」が可能な土壌が整いつつある状況を見据え、DIYバイオに対する市民の認識を明らかにしながら、DIYバイオに関わる倫理的・法的・社会的課題（ELSI）の調査を行い、さらにはDIYバイオのELSIについての教育プログラムを開発することを計画している。今年度は、一般市民の中にDIYバイオへの認識がどの程度広がっているかを調査するためのインターネットアンケート調査に向けた事前調査として、DIYバイオの普及を担う体験イベントへの参加やコミュニティの活動に関する情報についてDIYバイオに関わる方々からの聞き取り調査を実施して情報収集を行った。これらの調査でDIYバイオを表現する言葉が1つでないことから（e.g.DIYバイオ、バイオハック）、市民認識の調査の際にはこれらの言葉の扱い方やDIYバイオへの認識を持っていない人を不安にしないような表現を用いた質問票の設計が必要になることを認識し、予定していた質問票は不十分であることが判った。そこで質問票を作り直した上で一般市民を対象とするインターネットアンケート調査を行い、国内を中心にDIYバイオコミュニティへのインタビュー調査によって，DIYバイオが広がる社会に必要なELSIについて整理することとする．
