The project has been targeting the synthesis of new crystalline materials with two-dimensional-layered hybrid architectures comprising C60 and polyaromatic hydrocarbon building blocks. This has been successful for the polyaromatic hydrocarbon, triphenylene. The resulting strongly-correlated Mott insulating phases have been structurally characterized down to cryogenic temperatures and reveal unique architectures and a variety of phase transitions. They have now been chemically manipulated to afford crystalline reduced materials with two-dimensional architectures. Their properties focusing on metallicity and superconductivity are being actively pursued.
