A study on methodology of architectural drawings in Edo-era

Questionnaires sent to around 2,800 of organizations to ask if they own Sashizu-drawings allowed us to identify around 40 organizations as owners of large collection of Sashizu. From the collections we selected approximately 800 drawings to investigate, and bibliographic data and photographs were taken from approximately 500 drawings out of the 800 drawings selected.In the study we obtained the following results :1. Most Sashizu-drawings are preserved by the libraries, educational institutions and community centers of local governments, and the number of Sashizu-drawings currently preserved is proportional to the total number of documents that originally existed within the respective clan with higher remaining probability in larger clan.2. The facts pointed out by Goto, chief of this study, in his study on Nakai Family's drawing methodology (Goto, "A study on Nakai Family's documents, Vol. 1 through 10", Chuohkoronbizyutsusyuppan, 1976-1985) are also applicable to these in other clans.3. Drawings with unique features also existed in some clans. For examples, Nakai Family's drawings changed their type from Hariezu-drawing (a floor plan illustrated by using different colored papers pasted on white background paper) to Kakiezu-drawing (a floor plan drawn directly on white background by using brush or the like) in the later half of 18 century. However, in the both Takeo-Nabeshima and Shimabara-Matsudaira Clans in Kyusyu area, only Hariezu type is used throughout Edo era. Other unique techniques were developed in Okayama-Ikeda and Hirosaki-Tsugaru Clans as well.
