本研究は、近代の女性作家が師にあたる作家から受けた指導の内容や添削、批評等を検討することで、女性が小説等を執筆する際に社会から求められたものについて考察し、当時の女性をめぐる社会規範の一端を明らかにすることを目的としている。今年度は主に明治20年代の時代状況について考察を行った。樋口一葉が半井桃水や中島歌子から与えられた指導内容と、それらが持ちうる意味について、ジェンダーの視点から考察を行った。また、女性が文章を通して自己表現をしていくことについて、当時の論説では理想や警告が説かれていたが、それらの内容と実際に女性の創作に与えられた指導内容との間に懸隔はなかったかという観点からも検討を行った。具体的には、原稿、日記、書簡、回顧録など基礎的な資料の確認を行ったうえで、樋口一葉と半井桃水との交渉に関する資料、半井桃水の所属した東京朝日新聞関連の資料、「女学雑誌」などが示した当時の女性の規範に関わる言説、半井桃水が創刊し樋口一葉の小説の発表の舞台となった「武蔵野」の内容とそれに関わる評論を確認した。結果としては、当初、先行研究で取り上げられていない点や、重視されていない点について検討する予定であったが、めざましい発見には至らなかったため、調査の対象を変更することとなった。樋口一葉と同門の田辺花圃が明治21年に「藪の鴬」を発表した際、坪内逍遙から添削を受けた事実から、田辺花圃の執筆活動をめぐる調査を行った。計画に変更は生じたが、研究の目的を変えることなく調査を継続することができた。
