Neutron scattering is an exquisitely powerful and unique sicentific tool for sutdies of the structure and dynamical behavior of condensed mater on a microscopic scale, in areas ranging from physics to biology to engineering and material science.Accelerator driven pulsed neutron sources, pioneered by Japan and the UK,are the clear choice for the next generation neutron sources. The Japan-UK Collaboration in Neutron Scattering is a consequence of an Agreement between the Japanese High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) and the UK's Council for the Central Laboratories of Research Councils (CCLRC) established in 1996 to promote scientific collaboration and interchange between Japanese and UK scientists in the field of pulsed neutron scattering. It has resulted in the construction of the MAPs spectrometer at the ISIS Facility and has given formal access to the scientific program at ISIS for Japanese scientists.The scientific achievements of the Japan-UK Collaboration in the Year of 1997 are as follows. Construction of one-dimensional position-sensitive detector bank was started. Budget for the construction was provided by Monbusho in FY1997 (56,000,000 yen). Within these three years, joint construction project of MAPs will be completed and MAPS will be used for collaborative scientific researches.Highlights of the works with already-installed ISIS spectrometers in 1997 include studies of magnetic excitatins in quantum ladder systems, fracton excitations in two-dimensional diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnetic systems etc.
