縄文人・アイヌの北東アジア起源説を形態学的に次の2点に分けて再検討を行った。1 北東アジア集団と東南アジア集団は独立した2系統の集団なのか。2 縄文人、アイヌは北東アジアの基層集団に属し、東南アジア集団とは無関係か。本年度は、頭蓋計測値については34計測項目で世界の115主要集団を、非計測的特徴については20項目で65集団を対象として比較分析を実施した。その結果、1については、両者の独立性を示唆する結果は得られず、少なくとも頭蓋形態に関しては、ユーラシア大陸東縁、及び、西太平洋地域集団はおそらく広義の東アジアの南部を源郷とする集団である可能性がもっとも高いことが示唆された。2については、アイヌと縄文人が系統的に近い関係にあることを再確認し、さらに、縄文人に比べて、アイムが多かれ少なかれ北東アジアの形質的特徴を合わせ持つことが示唆された。しかし、基本的には、両者の系統をユーラシア大陸東縁の北半に求めることは困難であると思われる。以上の結果は、近世アイヌの成立には、北東アジア集団も何らかの影響を与えた可能性を示唆するのかもしれない。いずれにしろ、縄文人とアイヌの間には数千年の時代差があり、また、その間にはたとえばオホーツク文化の北海道への波及、和人の進出、環境の変化など様々な変遷があり、上記の結果は、その過程で近世アイヌの遺伝的形質が縄文時代以降どのように変化していったのかを再考しなければならないことを示唆する。
