まず始めに、採用期間中には採用以前から保持していたシク教社会美術史関連図書を購読した。それらの購読の結果、グル・ナーナクの肖像画が成立した背景には、後継者争いやムガル朝との対立が深まる中、シク教が歴史的に場所や物体などの視覚的な権威に依存するようになったことが明らかになった。また、グル・ナーナク肖像画が成立した19世紀後半には、聖典の権威を支持する保守派と同時代の指導者たちを支持する改革派が存在しており、グル・ナーナク信仰は両者が折り合える唯一の妥協点であったと推測される。以上の文献購読の成果は所属研究科の公聴会での口頭発表として結実した。その場の質疑の中で、本研究はキリスト教などの他宗教と比較をしながら考察を進めていく必要があるとの助言を受けた。さらに、肖像画に描かれている人物と生前の姿が似ていないのではないかという指摘も受けた。8月8日から9日にかけて実施した東京出張では、イスラーム美術史が専門で、東京大学で教鞭を取っていらっしゃる桝屋友子先生からセカンドオピニオンを頂戴した。桝屋先生によれば、美術史学の見地からすると、議論の要となっている絵画資料の分析は妥当であると思われるものの、その記述が甘いと指摘された。幸いにも、東京の国立博物館にはシク教に関連する絵画資料が保管されており、東洋館の建て替えに伴って新たに展示品・所蔵品を調査することができた。その際には科学研究費で購入した単眼鏡やデジタルカメラを用い、入手したデータはノートパソコンで編集・加工し、整理して保存することができた。
