Abstract The Administrative Core will run the Enrichment Program, and will coordinate and integrate the Histology, Biochemistry and Molecular Imaging (HBMI) and the Biomechanics, Biomaterials and Multimodal Tissue Imaging (B2MTI) Cores, in order to ensure progress of the Rochester Resource- based Center for Bone, Muscle and Orthopaedic Research (ROCSTARR) in an efficient manner. The Core Users Committees, the URMC Shared Resource Laboratories & Facilities, and meeting structure of the Administrative Core are key elements that organize the communication and collaboration among the ROCSTARR investigators, as well as with other faculty in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research (CMSR) and collaborating Departments and Centers within the University. The activities of the Co-Directors, Mentors, Advisors, and staff in the Administrative Core will be tightly monitored by the Core Users Committee, which is made up of junior to mid-career faculty and trainees, and was established in our 2019 Center for Musculoskeletal Research (CMSR) 5-year Strategic Plan to provide direct feedback. These activities, which will be formally reviewed weekly by the Co-Directors, are embodied by the following Specific Aims. 1) To maintain state-of-the-art resource-based Cores for basic science, translational and clinical bone, muscle & orthopaedic research; and utilize these resources in a cost-effective manner to accelerate the pace of discovery and clinical translation. 2) To continue to foster our highly collaborative environment that translates basic research into clinical trials, and to expand our outreach activities with a new focus on underrepresented minorities, to promote the use of the resources offered by the P30 Core to new external collaborations that will grow our musculoskeletal research base at URMC, nationally and internationally. 3) To grow our Pilot Grant Program from $100,000 to $130,000 per year with a new parallel Discovery Fund, with which the Mentoring Core will expeditiously allocate small grants up to $5,000. We will also enhance our Enrichment Programs beyond these Pilot Grants, the William F. Neuman Visiting Professor series, and Annual Musculoskeletal Research Symposium, by expanding the community and promoting innovative research in bone, muscle and orthopaedic research. 4) To maintain our Clinical-Translational Sub- Core that administers human subject research services leveraging and customizing resources from the Clinical-Translational Science Institute, to enhance the translation of musculoskeletal basic science to clinical application, and grow collaborative networks with a new emphasis on Big Data science, surgical outcomes and population health research. And, 5) To expand our highly successful Mentoring Program, which facilitates the advancement of our New/Early Stage Investigators to NIH R01 funded PIs and national leadership status, and implements the highest standards of scientific rigor in response to NIH’s plan to enhance reproducibility. Execution of these aims will accelerate and enhance the productivity and establishment of the musculoskeletal research work force at URMC and beyond.
