Pressure to decarbonise maritime transportation is generating a large growth in the use of Hydrogen as fuel on ships. Although currently a small market it is rapidly expanding. One of the key challenges associated with the use of Hydrogen as fuel on ships is risk of explosion due to leaks of hydrogen. To address this need we are developing a safer system which dramatically reduces risk of explosions or fire.CH2 Safe Storage Project is aiming to develop a plug and play, modular storage system for compressed hydrogen fuel to be used on ships. The system has increased safety (in comparison with the existing alternatives) and standardisation which will provide a benefits to vessel builders and operators.The aim of the project is to develop a solution with high UK supply chain content, which will benefit UK economy and create jobs.The system aims to be a first packaged storage solution with certification from a classification society on the market hence taking advantage of the buoyant market.
