45% of the world's electricity is used in driving motors and this is almost certain to grow (Drives&Controls, 2016). Many of these motors are used in the automotive industry where they major investment is driving improvements in efficiency (Renault, 2021). Indeed, reducing range anxiety is a huge part of the challenge in selling electric cars (GEV, 2021).However, huge numbers of motors are used in less glamorous but equally important locations -- pumps, process control, UAVs, construction equipment, medical equipment etc. Many of these applications are switching over to the benefits of brushless DC motors with advanced controllers but, we know from experience, that efficiency in this area could be improved significantly. This project sets out to resolve this through the development of the first in a new range of highly efficient brushless DC motor controllers.
