Vertical Aerospace is developing a high performance, entirely electrically powered aircraft capable of Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL). There is currently no battery system in the world that Vertical can use for this type of application. Vertical Aerospace and UCL are working together in this project on the development of a battery system that can be used as primary propulsion in a category enhanced aircraft. Such a battery system would be a world-first. This project will utilise the expertise in both organisations to optimise future designs of this battery for maximum energy and power for the available mass. All the while maintaining stringent safety standards.The Category Enhanced Battery Development project (CEBD) will develop the key design, manufacturing, training and qualification capabilities to facilitate the future industrialisation of a UK-based primary propulsion battery system.This is crucial to ensuring that the UK develops the core technologies to manufacture new electric aircraft across multiple different aerospace platforms.
