Innovations in Treatments for Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Southwestern PFDN site

ABSTRACT The University of New Mexico’s clinical site has continued to make major contributions to the current 2016- 2021 PFDN cycle. These include continued evaluation of data collected in the 2011-2015 cycle, active participation in all appropriate studies and manuscripts, and retention of appropriate participants with focus on continued participation of an underserved population and continued meticulous data collection. We have met the Network’s goal of conducting rigorous, multi-center trials to investigate the clinical and personal aspects of pelvic floor disorders on women. We achieved our objectives of bringing under-represented women to these Network trials and met or exceeded Network goals in the recruitment and retention of women to ongoing PFDN clinical trials. Dr. Yuko Komesu MD is UNM’s Principal Investigator (PI). She is a seasoned clinical trials investigator, whose leadership provided continued oversite of major translational work this cycle. The University of New Mexico, since its initial entry into the PFDN, has added clinical sub-sites at Sandoval County Regional Medical Center (SRMC), the Albuquerque Veteran’s Administration Hospital (VAH), and Gallup Indian Medical Center (a U.S. Indian Health Services referral center). In addition to Dr. Komesu, our urogynecologic clinical faculty includes Gena Dunivan MD, Peter Jeppson MD (sub-site PI SRMC), Cara Ninivaggio MD and Kate Meriwether MD, all of whom have participated extensively in all aspects of research during this cycle. In addition to our talented urogynecologic faculty, UNM brings a skilled multidisciplinary team of urologists, colo-rectal surgeons, physical therapists, imaging specialists, and PhD’s to participate in PFDN work. This proposal highlights the accomplishments of the UNM clinical site this cycle and our plans for continued successful contributions to the PFDN in the upcoming bridge year.
