The technology sector (encompassing electronics, software, computers and AI) is responsible for ~4% of global emissions; on a par with global aviation. These emissions are projected to reach 10-30% by 2030\. The growing reliance on data-centres is a key driver that is increasing emissions significantly, with data-centres using \\\>11% of Ireland's electricity generated. Several areas, including North London, have limited the construction of data-centres to reduce electrical grid demands. The EU's Sustainable Financial Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and the UK Sustainable Disclosure Regulation (SDR) come into operation in 2023/24, and place requirements on large organisations to report on their Scope 3 carbon-footprint. This opens a significant market, potentially £44bn, and has the potential to dramatically reduce emissions if organisations can fully utilise their data. The US and other large economies are expected to enter the market within a few years. Greenpixie is a UK-based technology company delivering sustainability data about cloud-computing usage to multiple sectors using a novel and innovative approach that provides granular data outputs. This supports enhanced decision-making for businesses. The current approach to greenhouse gas emissions of digital services relies on tools offered by service providers, however, these often do not deliver enough in-depth or granularity within the data. The big 3 cloud-service providers are also not incentivised to reduce cloud-data wastage. Additionally, service providers only offer tools that work on their own platform, making managing emissions across multiple cloud-service providers (AWS(Amazon), Azure(Microsoft) and GCP(Google)) impossible. Greenpixie's approach delivers a technology-agnostic view on emissions data allowing an organisation to easily understand their entire portfolio of services.
