Surround or multichannel sound is commonly experienced in cinemas and in cultural contexts, such as performances and art gallery exhibitions. This market continues to grow steadily. For instance, Dolby Atmos has been recently adopted by major media streaming platforms such as Netflix and Apple Music.Our project envisions designing a multichannel audio connectivity standard and bespoke loudspeakers that exploit innovative technology by using the most recent versions of the Universal Serial Bus standard (USB Power Delivery, also known as USB PD). The USB connector has established itself as the most common way of connecting electronic accessories. In 2022, the EU passed new rules that require that all manufacturers of portable devices (e.g., laptops, phones, tablets, etc.) must adopt USB-C connectors from 2024\. From 2026, laptop chargers must only use USB-C. Establishing these rules guarantees the reduction of electronic waste and eliminates the complexity of connectivity we face today. Sonalux will take advantage of the new USB PD standard, and integrate it into commercial loudspeakers, specifically designed for the purpose of multichannel sound connectivity. We will develop a new standard that will allow the production of speakers for surround audio at an affordable level via a single connector, reaching the growing market of home-theatre equipment.
