The Ammonia CapChar Project will be led by CapChar Ltd alongside subcontractors Tumblebug Ltd and Cambridge Eco Ltd.Biochar is a carbon based material that has a large surface area and a cation exchange capacity that enables it to sorb nutrients and ammonia. The project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of biochar covers on liquid slurry stores to significantly reduce ammonia emissions during storage. This project will explore how a new local, circular, sustainable solution can be created to produce biochar via on-farm pyrolysis technology, providing savings and new revenue streams. By deploying this technology, biochar could be used in other agricultural practices leading to further ammonia emission reduction efficiency gains.The biochar or biochar-filled covers, once spent, can become a slow release fertiliser, keeping nutrients on-farm and reducing nitrogen losses from agricultural land and run-off into waterways.
