Preventing and managing chronic diseases like CVD has been declared the challenge of the 21st century by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and meeting this moment requires the full breadth of the United States population to be engaged and involved in biomedical research. African American males and other marginalized groups continue to be underrepresented in studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and there is a critical need to reduce racial disparities in research participation. The purpose of this study is to examine factors associated with trust in medical research and perceptions about biomedical research participation. The aims of this diversity supplement are to: 1) modify and administer an online survey to 18-35 year old residents of Jackson, MS and Houston, TX to examine factors associated with participant trust in medical research and perceptions about biomedical research participation and 2) develop professional and scientific communication skills of the supplement candidate through presenting study findings to general and scientific audiences. The achievement of these aims will enhance professional skills of the candidate while providing interactive research experiences to encourage pursuit of a career in biomedical research.
