Project Summary
Nearly half of adults in the United States (47%, or 116 million) have high blood pressure (hypertension). If
untreated, hypertension can cause heart disease and stroke. The purpose of this application is to request travel
funds to support trainees who wish to attend and participate in the Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2022 to be
held on September 7–10, 2022 in San Diego, California. Hypertension Scientific Sessions are organized by two
Councils of the American Heart Association: Council on Hypertension and Council on Kidney in Cardiovascular
Disease. This meeting is considered one of the most important and prestigious meetings focused on
hypertension. The conference includes oral and poster presentations selected from abstracts submitted by
clinical and basic researchers, followed by discussions run by leading authorities. Attendees will have the
opportunity to interact closely with experts from around the world involved in cross-disciplinary research in
hypertension, cardiac and kidney disease, genetics, stroke, and obesity. This meeting will offer sessions
specifically designed to benefit trainees and early career investigators. In addition, Clinical Practice topics
focused on applying clinical science to the clinician’s practice and Primary Care programming dedicated to
practical advice for the Primary Care Provider treating patients with hypertension will be offered. After two years
of virtual conferences due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hypertension researchers are eager to re-engage in face-
to-face dialogue, networking, and scientific discussion. By supporting the travel, education, and development of
these promising early-career scientists, we hope to expand and diversify the current workforce, ultimately
increasing research in the scope of hypertension research. The specific aims of 2022 Hypertension Scientific
Sessions and this application are: 1) Provide early-career attendees with a forum to present their research and
obtain constructive feedback from a knowledgeable international audience of scientists working in the field of
hypertension; 2) Encourage trainees to enhance their current knowledge base by attending state-of-the-art and
cutting-edge symposia and lectureships organized by the Hypertension Sessions Planning Committee; 3) Offer
trainees an opportunity to network with their peers and senior scientists in the area of hypertension; and 4) To
increase the diversity of underrepresented groups in science amongst speakers and moderators. This award
will facilitate URM researchers, trainees, and early career researchers at a time when institutions are still limiting
expenditures on travel.
