This is a pilot project on the domestication, commercial breeding and economic production of grasscutter, a large African rodent recognized as both an important protein source and popular urban premium meat species. The overall goal is to reduce poverty and stimulate the agricultural livestock sector in rural Ghana. Within this project we plan to: 1. Establish a production breeding programme that delivers grasscutter breedstock to farmers 2. Develop a network of farmers trained in grasscutter production and processing 3. Deliver small business management training to grasscutter farm enterprises staffed by women 4. Support grasscutter cooperatives in northwest Ghana in marketing and product development The project is a partnership between a Ghanaian NGO, the University of Ghana and the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh.
