New sensor technologies are changing the users' experience of interaction with the products around us. Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR) offers a new way of interacting with technologies in intuitive and naturalistic ways. The potential applications for HGR are broad, ranging from Smart TVs to healthcare and mobile devices. However, there is significant interest from the automotive industry where HGR can help to alleviate the problem of driver distraction, caused by diverting attention away from the road to operate in-car systems. The aim of this project is to explore the feasibility of a revolutionary low-cost HGR technology, through the creation and evaluation of an interactive demonstrator targeted at automotive applications. Using established user-centred evlauation techniques, the technology will be evaluated in a simulated driving environment, providing detailed data on the effects of the system on driver performance. The project findings will be used both to demonstrate the effectiveness of the product to potential partners and to improve the effectiveness of the technology.
