CODA- a device to allow the safe transfer of fluids from the DUET, a retractable safety syringe

A needle-stick injury (NSI) occurs when a syringe that has been in a patient, accidentally punctures another person’s skin posing risk of bloodborne viruses (e.g. Hepatitis B and C and HIV). Cost of NSIs to the NHS is £500m and $2bn in the US. The “safe syringe” market has grown quickly to >$3bn but NSIs are not falling significantly and USA data shows most occur whilst using safe syringes. C-Major Limited has proven the concept of DUET, a novel safety syringe protected by a portfolio of patents which overcomes the limitations of existing syringes with patented retractable needle, one handed push button activation and application in both aspiration & injection. Trials have shown safety is significantly improved, but have highlighted there is still a risk of NSIs when used for aspiration. The objective of this project to therefore prove feasibility of CODA, a small plastic adaptor which enables safe dispensing of any aspirated fluid after retraction of the needle by reopening the fluid path. CODA with DUET will be sold via territory specific distributors. Initial target markets will be A&E units, paramedics and walk in clinics, with expansion into wider medical apps & diabetics.
