Electric and Hybrid drivetrains require numerous electric pumps, as they are used to circulate media particularly coolant and refrigerant within the thermal management system. This is one of the largest parasitic power consumers in the EV drivetrain. This 12-month feasibility study, in collaboration with AVID Technology, will test the viability of the FeTu 'Roticulating' concept as a coolant and refrigerant pump. The objective of the project is to determine the performance and efficiency of the FeTu pump, ascertaining if it improves upon the performance of current state of the art. Improving thermal management offers significant benefits to both electric and hybrid vehicles; it could potentially increase the battery range of the vehicle, displace the need for bigger batteries offering advantages to the environment and most critically making electrified-vehicles more accessible and affordable to users improving the uptake of electric/hybrid vehicles.
